Carbon Reduction Sponsored Content Evolution Ag Summit Addresses Carbon Reduction Initiatives The Evolution Ad Summit is a one day event happening February 21, 2023, at the North Dakota Farmers Union Headquarters in Jamestown. The Summit will allow North Dakota farmers and ranchers to hear from a variety of experts on how carbon reduction initiatives can impact their operations and shape our agriculture and food supply chains. "It's a real opportunity facing producers today," said David Ripplinger, professor and bioenergy economist at NDSU. "They're having conversations and in many cases, the contract is on the table. It's a big decision so I'm really excited we're going to have a day to give farmers the framework, tools and background to make an informed decision: Ripplinger added that educational activities have historically been related to production and economics, but carbon has become a growing topic that's at the doorstep of producers in our area. The Summit will help give them the information they need to navigate the issue soundly. "It really is to provide that baseline understanding of carbon in general, but especially as it relates to a farmer and that decision, Ripplinger said. 'They're the ultimate audience we want to get to so they can make decisions for their farm today and in the future." Speakers will take the stage to cover a wide range of topics related to the carbon sequestration programs that are becoming available. Ripplinger will kick off the Summit getting farmers up to speed on the basics of carbon, which will be followed by a dive into sustainability commitments and supply chains from several experts, including Nikki Zahradka with Anheuser-Busch and Colin Beal from Low Carbon Beef. Zach Johnson, the Millennial Farmer, will be the event's keynote speaker. The fifth-generation family farmer from West Central Minnesota has become a national voice for agriculture and strives to build the connection between farmers and consumers. "Zach will appeal to a lot of the younger farmers," said Mark Watne, North Dakota Farmers Union president. "I think attendees are going to get a good taste of what's out there and what they should be watching out for as these carbon initiatives develop. The afternoon will include discussions on a wide range of topics, including renewable fuels, the risks and rewards of carbon farming. public and private conservation initiatives, and perspectives from farmers and ranchers. "Carbon is getting to be a big thing, Watne said. "It's impacting not only our markets, its impacting public policy, and world trade, and it's going to be essential that farmers and ranchers understand what their options may or may not be and hopefully a bunch of opportunities they can develop. There will be a lot of talent in that room to get your questions answered: Watne noted he's starting to see markets, both near and abroad, demand lower carbon footprints, making it a good opportunity for agriculture and for farmers and ranchers to be a part of that system and extract value from it. "Just looking at carbon as an opportunity for producers in many respects it's a new strain, Ripplinger said. "An analogy oftentimes used is you can sell a crop above the ground and now you can have a crop below the ground." See the full agenda and register for the event at ndfu.org/evolutionag. Tickets are $30 per person.
